BERLIN (Reuters) – The cost of at least 19 lives in western Germany shows the need to speed up climate protection measures, Conservative candidate Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday to make the terrible floods a success.
“We don’t yet have an accurate picture of how many victims there are in the northern Rhine-Westphalia state. But we can estimate there are several dead, who were victims of this flood disaster,” said Armin Laschet, the federal head of state.
“We will face such incidents many times over, and that means we need to step up the pace on climate protection measures, European, federal and global, because climate change is not limited to one state.”
